Roxie and Charlotte bring home three medals from Yorkshire Championships

Beverley Barracudas Swimming Club

The Barracudas have done it again! A stack of PBs, finalist places, and three medals – all very well earned from the Yorkshire Swimming Association Championships.

Roxie Twidale and Charlotte Wilkinson showed exceptional tenacity and skill to power their way to top-three places in three events in the final weekend of the competition.

Roxie won silver in both the 50m Butterfly and 50m Freestyle, and Charlotte won bronze in the 50m Breaststroke.

They were among nine swimmers who triumphed over tough competition to earn places in the individual event finals. The club’s relay teams, with swimmers aged from nine to 17, also reached the finals for their events.

Beverley Barracudas Swimming Club saw dozens of swimmers qualify for and attend the county championships, held over three weekends in Leeds and Sheffield. With 48 swimmers taking part in individual events, and 60 in the relays, the club was very well represented.

Three swimmers reached the finals of their events in the second weekend of the competition: Will S in 200m Breaststroke, Flora M in 100m Freestyle, and Charlotte W in 200m Breaststroke.

The third and final weekend saw more finalists, with Thomas G, Anna P, Flora M, Florence K, Harry R and George P, as well as Roxie and Charlotte going on to finish in the top three in their events.

The competition finale was a day of relays, with places in the finals for Barracudas teams in the following age groups:

Boys’ 9/10 x 2

Girls 9/10 x 2

Girls 13/14

Girls 15/16

Boys 13 and Over x 2

Head coach Wayne Smith said he was proud to have witnessed some exceptional performances, with outstanding commitment from the swimmers, coaches and poolside team. But he also praised the team spirit members demonstrated.

He said: ‘Two of our swimmers in particular, Alex S and Penny C, showed remarkable commitment to their teams.

‘Alex swam despite not feeling well, because he didn’t want to let down his teammates. A true credit to his character and resolve when things get tough.

‘And Penny stepped up to the plate when the 11/12 girls’ team were short of someone to swim butterfly, and ended up putting in a great performance.

‘These are the kind of attitudes, as well as the skill, talent and hard work, that make Beverley Barracudas such a great club. We can be very proud of our swimmers for what they brought to the Yorkshires.’
